Totnes is one of the most attractive market towns in South Devon. It is locally famous for it's alternative and hippy community. In summer, ferry boats run from the quay to Dartmouth.

Ferry to Dartmouth

Boats leave from Steamer Quay, over the old bridge from the Town centre, then turn right. It is a short walk or there is car parking at the Quay. The cruise takes about 75 minutes each way, contact Dart Valley Railway/River Link for more information (telephone 01803 553760). Boats run all year round.

Steam train to Buckfastleigh

Take a scenic train ride alongside the Dart river up to Buckfastleigh on the edge of Dartmoor. The train runs from lasst week of March until end of October and is operated by The South Devon Railway.

Castle and Keep

Totnes Castle is owned by English Heritage, open from last week in March until end of October, every day from 10am to 5pm and reasonable cost of entry. The castle is a classic Norman Motte and Bailey. There is a small round keep and a leafy park at the base. Good views over Totnes from the ramparts. Access is from a small lane to the right if going up the High Street.

Dartington, Cider Press

Dartington College and Estate is just out of town on the main road toward Exeter. There are woodland walks, pottery, 15 shops and craft workshops and a cider press. Free car parking and picnic sites by the river Dart. Dartington Cider Press Centre is at Shinners Bridge.

Vire Island

Buy a picnic in the local bakery and sit in the shady peace of Vire island, accessed from steps on the old bridge over the Dart. Vire island is a small park on the river. Watch out for the ducks.
