Chagford from Meldon Hill
Padley Common

Chagford is a small market town on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor and close to the River Teign. Chagford was one of Dartmoor's four stannary towns. It's relative isolation leaves it fairly quiet from traffic and having a thriving town with shops, restaurants and pubs. The market square is dominated by the octagonal market house, locally known as "The Pepper Pot". Chagford means "gorse ford", from the moorland gorse bush, and the ford over the River Teign below the town. For a great view, try Meldon Hill just to the south, there is parking here and the summit at 390m is an easy walk. The River Teign is a short walk from the town cetre, follow a little lane north-west out of the town and down the hill to a small bridge on the river. The footpath runs on the north bank of the River Teign all the way to Fingle Bridge. To get to Chagford, take the A382 Moretonhampstead road from the A30 Exeter to Okehampton road.

Chagford Swimming Pool

An open air pool fed by freshwater from the river and heated by solar power. Chagford Swimming Pool is open from the end of May until September. There is limited parking, so it's best to walk from the town centre.
