Barnstaple is the main town for North Devon and gateway to the North Devon beaches of Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton. It lies on the Taw Estuary and the western edge of Exmoor. The Tarka Trail passes through the town along the estuary using the old railway line from Braunton over the bridges and toward Instow. Is is a small, easy going market town, but has many facilities of a larger city due to the fact that it services a large low populated, rural area.

Barnstaple is currently undergoing a regeneration programme, which already has seen the opening of the western bypass and bridge, which has relieved some of it's notorious congestion problems. This can be a problem in the summer, due to it's position as a choke point to the popular coastal areas nearby.

The town has won the Britain in Bloom contest on a number of years and has some attractive parks and gardens. Pilton and Newport have some elegant Georgian buildings which show that they were villages swallowed as the town grew.

The North Devon Link road, built in 1989, gives good access to the M5, usually taking about 30 minutes drive from the edge of town to the dual carriageway at Tiverton. it is single carriageway with some dual passing places.

The new Boston Tea Party is a great place for coffee and Claytons is recommended for a good place to eat or drink.
